Would you like to volunteer for the 2017 Squirrel Box Derby on Saturday, May 27? It’s a great way to spend a beautiful day in downtown Brevard supporting Transylvania County Schools, and helping to bring back the Derby!


Dear Volunteers…. and Future Volunteers…

We’re very excited about the Squirrel Box Derby & this weekend’s White Squirrel Festival! 

After a successful first run in 2016, Transylvania County Schools is back for the big event in 2017, and we’re still happy to keep learning from the experience of our racers and friends. Our local public schools always brighten up the Heart of Brevard’s downtown festivals, and this is one more occasion for great work and lots of fun!



RESCUE SQUAD: Transylvania County Rescue Squad members are simply Derby Day CHAMPIONS! This year’s race is no different. They are all volunteers and provide standby emergency care all day, plus certified drivers & ATVs to move cars safely back to the top of Jailhouse Hill. We could never do this without them!

RACE COURSE: In years past, Rescue Squad has also done heavy lifting for setup and takedown… This is where we come in! Volunteers will be very helpful for moving hay, tires, and netting to stage the race course from 7am-9am, setup from 10am-11am, and takedown from 5pm-6pm.

TENTS, TABLES, CHAIRS: We have one large tent, but more tents for things like selling bottled water and T-shirts, or managing a raffle will certainly be welcome on a hot, sunny day. Do you have pop-up tents? We’re especially looking for one narrow enough to fit in the bed of a pickup…

LOGISTICS: We may need some help transporting bales of straw to Jailhouse Hill, before and after the race. If you can assist with trailers and/or able bodies Friday night and again on Saturday night or Sunday, let us know. Tarps… also helpful!

COSTS: Transylvania County Schools is responsible for all Derby costs and will collect all revenue. Costs include race course gear (netting, hay, chalk paint), awards, items for sale, and an honorarium to thank the Rescue Squad.

REVENUE: To raise revenue we will offer a raffle, sell race T-shirts, and also bottled water. Any items (including food not prepared on site) are also potentially open for sale…  Your school group (belonging to Transylvania County Schools) is welcome to join and sell your wares or services on Race Day. Proceeds stay with the groups! If your school group has goods or services to sell, or to offer for sale by volunteers, let us know!

DONATIONS: Donated items—large or small—for the raffle would be another huge support. We also want to provide lunch from Zaxby’s for the 10+ Rescue Squad members who are going above and beyond in service to the community. Would you or your group like to cover their lunch? Do you have an ideal raffle basket or item? Let us know!

ATTRACTIONS: Along with very colorful Derby cars, some squirrelly characters will stop by during the race, along with our friend from BES— BeeZ! This is definitely the place to be on Saturday… come and see!
