The Squirrel Box Derby schedule is as follows.

6:30am – Drivers and crews may begin setting up pit areas in the parking lot at the SE corner of Broad St. & French Broad St. across from Dugan’s Pub.
7:00am – Jailhouse Hill will close at or before 7am for vendors to shuttle their goods downtown for the two-day festival. Weigh-ins and safety checks may begin at a designated area near the pits. As soon as cars have cleared weigh-in and safety inspection, we will begin road-testing on the course.
8:50am – Racing activities cease on Broad St. to make way for the parade.
9:00am – Memorial Day parade. Weigh-ins and safety checks, along with repairs and required modifications may continue.
10:00am – Wreath ceremony at courthouse gazebo on Main St. There will be no downhill activity until the close of this ceremony.
11:00am – Road-testing will resume. Racing will proceed in the order below, as soon as cars are cleared to begin competitive heats:
Youth ages 8-11 | Youth ages 12-17 | Open Division (18+/Business)
5:00pm – Latest projected end for finals of the Open Division. Awards to follow at the main stage on E. Main Street next to the Chamber of Commerce/Visitors Center.
Cars will race a minimum of two times, once in each of the two racing lanes. Brackets will be made based on these results until our winners are determined.
Race organizers have sole discretion for determining safety of cars and safety of roads due to rain/wet. In the event of rain, the rain date is Sunday, May 28, with a projected start time of 9:00am for racing.
Trophies will be awarded for the top three racers in each division, based on head-to-head competition. Photo finish evidence will be available for every heat.
Cars must register but may drive for free in the youth divisions.
There is a $100 registration fee for the Open Division, which is payable on the day of the race by cash or check. A cash prize of $100 will be awarded to the top Open Division finisher.
An additional award, The Golden Nut, will be awarded to the crowd favorite for Nuttiest Design.
